Common SMTP Problems

If you are trying to access your e-mail but are getting an SMTP error there are a number of different possible issues depending on whether you are using your ISP as your SMTP or your website as SMTP.

ISP as SMTP

Connection Error

If you are getting a connection error where your ISP is your SMTP then try the following:

  • Check that you can get Internet Access. Try resetting you Internet Connection
  • If you have Internet Access are you using your own Internet Connection or a WIFI hotspot or someone elses Internet Connection.
    • If you are using your own Internet Connection then your ISP could be having a problem with their SMTP you can either wait or switch to our SMTP. To switch to our SMTP you need to change your SMTP settings

      SMTP Outgoing Server: mail.domain.com or www.domain.com where domain.com is your domain name e.g. 3legs.com
      SMTP Authentication: This should be turned on using either POP before SMTP or Use same settings as POP.
       
    • If you are using someone else's Internet Connection then your ISP may not allow you to connect to their server. You will need to change to using their ISP's SMTP or our server using the above details.

SMTP Authentication

This indicates that your SMTP Authentication settings are incorrect. Check that these are set correctly.

 

Using us as your SMTP

Connection Error

If you are getting a connection error where we are your SMTP then try the following:

  • Check that you can get Internet Access. Try resetting you Internet Connection
  • If you are using a wifi hotspot or someone else's Internet connection then the ISP may be blocking access to the SMTP port 25. You will need to change your SMTP setting to those required be your ISP.

If all else fails the do not forget that you have webmail access at webmail.domain.com where domain.com is your domain name e.g. 3legs.com.

SMTP Authentication

This indicates that your SMTP Authentication settings are incorrect. Check that these are set correctly.

  • SMTP Authentication: This should be turned on using either POP before SMTP or Use same settings as POP.
