Planning your Website

Planning your website is the key to getting the right site for your needs, and is a lot easier than you might think. It can help you to visualise what you want and provides a document that you can give to a web designer to provide a quote

This type of document is often known as a design brief, click here for details of what a design brief should contain.

Pages

Every website comprises a series of pages which branch out from the homepage. The first thing that you should do is make a list of all the pages and sections that you think you need. Below is a list of common pages:

  • About
  • Our services
    • Service A
    • Service B
  • Products
    • Product A
    • Product B
  • Quote
  • Contact Us
  • Client Comments
  • Feedback

How successful a website is depends on how easy it is for the user to find the right pages. Once you have your list of pages, check to see whether any of them can be grouped together to form a section. As an example, if you have a number of different products or services that each have their own page, then grouping them together in a section headed ‘Products’ or ‘Services’ allows users find these pages more easily.

Functionality

Once you have a list of pages, you need to decide whether any of them require additional specific functionality. Make a list of any features that you want on different pages. This can include things like photo galleries, forms, video, animation or calculators etc., as listed below. If there is anything that the website needs to do other than show a basic information page then describe what you want or how you envisage it working in as much detail as possible. Such functionality could include:

  • Shopping Cart & Online Ordering
  • Booking System
  • Quotations
  • Calculators
  • Content Management
  • Directories
  • Calendars
  • Etc

Content Supply / Generation

Every page within your website requires content. You need to decide what you will provide and what you want to be provided for you. In order to make sure that our web designers will be able to precisely meet your requirements, you will need to make a list of any content that you require them to produce and supply, such as:

  • Text Generation
  • Illustrations
  • Photography
  • Stock Images
  • Flash Animation
  • Documents
  • Logo

Look & Feel

Website design varies depending on budget. You need to let your web designer know what you want so that they may suggest a reasonable budget for the project. If you require to see multiple design proposals, then let the web designer know this. Web designers will want to get a feel for what you want, and the best way to do this is by providing examples of websites which you like (or don't) and which you would like your website based on. You should also have a high quality copy of your logo and details of any particular colour scheme or other brand identities that the design must fit in with. Finally, you should also include any other design requirements such as animation, drop-down menus, illustrations or photos. Where possible, provide examples of what you want.
